The Greatest Show on Earth: The Great Migration

Witness nature in its most raw and powerful form. Every year, over two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles thunder across the plains of the Serengeti in a relentless search for green pastures. At Uncensored Tour and Safaris, we take you to the heart of the action—from the dramatic river crossings to the quiet intensity of the calving season. This isn’t just a safari; it’s a front-row seat to the circle of life.

Where is the Migration? (The “Uncensored” Calendar)

The migration is a year-round cycle. Here is where we will take you depending on when you travel:

1. The Calving Season (January – March)

  • Location: Southern Serengeti & Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Ndutu).

  • The Experience: The plains are covered in a sea of green grass and half a million newborn calves.

  • The Drama: Where there are calves, there are predators. Expect high-octane sightings of lions, cheetahs, and hyenas on the hunt.

2. The Grumeti & Western Corridor (May – June)

  • Location: Western Serengeti.

  • The Experience: The herds head north, congregating around the Grumeti River. This is the first major water obstacle where massive Nile crocodiles lie in wait.

3. The Iconic River Crossings (July – October)

  • Location: Northern Serengeti (Kogatende & Mara River).

  • The Experience: This is the “Grand Finale.” Thousands of wildebeest plunge into the Mara River, battling treacherous currents and hungry crocodiles. It is an intense, heart-pounding spectacle that every traveler should see at least once.

4. The Return Journey (November – December)

  • Location: Central Serengeti (Seronera).

  • The Experience: As the short rains begin, the herds move south again, filling the central plains. This is a fantastic time for photography as the dust settles and the landscape turns a vibrant green.

📌 Pro-Tip for Travelers

The River Crossings are the most popular time to visit. We recommend booking at least 8 to 12 months in advance to secure the best luxury lodges in the Northern Serengeti during the peak months of August and September.
